Decor: Design Mistakes

I love this comment from Mariette Himes Gomez, one of Architectural Digest’s top 100 designers. She states that one of the biggest mistakes you can make in designing your home is ‘To replace professional advice with suggestions from a friend.’  When you hire a designer, you are hiring a professional. This professional has years of experience that they bring to your project. They will ask you about how you use your space, who uses the room, and what type of wear (kids, pets, food) will impact the project.

They will delve into your personal history. Do chintz florals remind you of your grandmother, and is that a good memory or a stuffy one?

They will make recommendations based on the style of your home. They will not put a Tuscan kitchen into a Greek revival home.

They will review your budgets so that money is spent wisely. They will take into account proportion, texture, scale, pattern …. all of the elements of good design.

Now we all have a best friend who gives us wise advice.  But if they are not bringing all of the above to the table then perhaps they are giving you an opinion. And an opinion is very different from advice.
